Fear --- What? Why?

The Lord is my light and my salvation —
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1 (NIV)

This verse from the Psalms has always been a favorite of mine.  In fact, this entire Psalm is one that I consider one of my "life's" Psalms.

There have been times when I've been afraid, frustrated, down or depressed that this particular verse has come to "rescue" me by helping me re-focus on the One who is my shelter, my protector, the light of my life even in times of darkness inside.

I pray:
"The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
I shall fear no one!" (my response, sometimes weak)
"The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
I shall not fear anyone or anything!" (response, growing stronger)

It's good to have the Word of God resident in our souls.  It's encouraging and inspiring.   It rises up to be a shield around us, a staff to lean on, a light at the end of our tunnel-vision.  When the Lord brings it up, it's to encourage us and it invokes a response.  When we speak it aloud, it somehow encourages us even more, like the Bible says "Faith comes by hearing."  Speaking God's word, waters the faith seed planted in our souls.  When we respond to God's word with our own, we are bound to it in such a way that the fruit it produces in our lives grows and grows and can never be destroyed.

Thanks God!

Be Joyful

The Apostle Paul said, "Be Joyful, Be Constant, Be Hopeful, Be Always Rejoicing, Be Anxious for Nothing ..."  There's a whole swarm of "bees" in his teachings.  What do bees do besides be bees?  They pollinate!  How do we pollinate --- by spreading the word of God --- by being all these things through Christ who gived us strength.  Then, when we are being joyful, constant, hopeful, and not worrying, we spread the joy of the Lord everywhere we go.  Others see and rejoice or ask us where we found such joy then God grows new converts and stronger believers and plants new seeds of blessings that continue long past our "beeing" here on earth!  So "bee" ...

A BIG BITE OF CHEERFULNESS W' A HELPING OF HUMILITY

“A big bite of cheerfulness with a helping of humility” --- This phrase is what I woke up with running over and over in my mind this morning.

Praise God! For starters: I’m alive! That’s a major plus.

Yesterday, I was foolish --- very foolish! After reading about “wisdom” in the Proverbs and praying for God’s help with the same, I proceeded to take my bicycle on a ride to the post office.

It was supposed to be one of the hottest days of the year, possibly making it up to 116° before the day was finished. My plan was to leave home before the heat began and to return before it got really bad. Here in Arizona, that meant 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.

By the time I was out the door, it was past 9:30. I made my trek to the P.O. stopping only every half mile or so to re-hydrate.

Once my business there was complete, I sat down to have a snack of grapes and drink some more water.

Now, here’s where “folly” (foolishness) came along. I saw that my water was over half gone. I thought, I’ll go to the store up the road a ways and get a refill on my water. “No,” I felt inside. “Go straight home.”

Again I reasoned, “But there’s no other place on the way home to stop and get water.”

--- Why do I argue with the Spirit of God when He tries to help me, to give me wisdom? ---

Once more, I felt constrained, that I should simply go straight home. So, on I proceeded to the store up the road. I shopped around, got some veggie snacks, got my water refilled, took a break, visited another store, then decided to come on home.

The ride was less than pleasant. The stops for water more frequent. The heat much more intense and draining. I finally arrived home around noon, at least an hour later than I’d planned.

Triumphantly, I called a couple of folks to let them know I’d arrived “safe and sound” so as to alleviate any concerns they might have had. Then, I settled in to business at my computer and a big snack instead of downing more water.

By one o’clock I was so sick. I was nauseous and hot and dry, very dry. I didn’t even want to drink because my stomach was so upset.

I prayed and asked for God’s forgiveness and e-mailed my oldest daughter to pray. Then, took a cool shower and went to bed.

“Dear God, why hadn’t I listened to You, to Your voice of wisdom. Please forgive me for pride and foolishness, for thinking I knew a better way. Forgive me, please, for not simply obeying Your instruction.”

All I wanted was to be forgiven. Rest was intermittent. My chest hurt, my head ached, my stomach was sick, and my muscles were cramped. I prayed that the Lord would keep me alive for the sake of my husband and my daughter who was about to be married, but I left the decision up to Him.

--- God is good! ---

I rested the remainder of the day, re-filling with a glass of water every time I got up.

Sometime in the night God restored me to health. Praise His name forever and ever!

So today, I awoke with instructions to take a “big bite of cheerfulness and a helping of humility.”

• God is still on the throne.
• He is loving and kind to all who call on Him.
• He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
• He is holy and pure and desires only the best for each of us.
• God deserves all glory and honor and praise because He is God!
• Praise His holy name!

Dear Lord, thank You for forgiving me of my sins of foolishness and pride, of thinking I knew a better way. Thank You for loving me and for loving those I love. Thank You for answering prayer each and every day. Thank You for restoring me to health and humbling my spirit before You. Thank You that You can even use our foolishness to teach us to trust in Your wisdom and Your word. You are good and Your loving kindness lasts forever. Amen! Praise Your name!

TEACH US TO PRAY

Our Father, who art in Heaven…

Dear Heavenly Father,
Holy, Holy, Holy is Your name.
May Your kingdom come and Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven, (even though we know that for that to really happen, things will get to looking a lot worse here before they start to get better). We still want Your will. Amen!

Give use this day our daily bread --- and thanks, God, that our daily needs never get forgotten by You. You always remember what we need and have it prepared for us ahead of time.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who’ve sinned against us. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. Lord, I forgive all those who have wronged me. Please, You forgive them too.

Lead us not into temptation. We know You never tempt anyone. Your word says so! But we know that You allow temptation in our lives so that we can become strong. It gives us a chance to practice righteousness, strengthening those “faith” muscles that will make us stand strong in battle. Just like You made gravity to tug on us and we fall when we’re learning to walk, we needed something that would counter us, pull against our muscles so that they could grow strong with resistance training.

Help us to resist temptation! To grow strong! To keep resisting! To keep growing and strengthening so that ultimately we will be ready to stand and even be found standing when all the battle dust blows away.

Thank You, God, for Your sovereignty. Thank You that You don’t just leave us out there to fend for ourselves. Thank You that You are faithful to deliver us from the evil one - from evil and the evil one. Thank You that we can cry out to You for deliverance and help and You are quick to save. It’s Your choice that we would be delivered!

Thank You for Your strength in us. Thank You for this great grace You have given us.

Thank You, God!
Yours is the kingdom!
All power belongs to You, in Heaven, on Earth, and under the Earth!
Yours is all the glory for eternity, now and forever,
Amen and amen!

I love You, Lord! Help me to love You as I should! Help me to fear You as I ought! All praise and honor and glory to You, Heavenly Father, Almighty God!

A PSALM OF JOY

Jeremiah 31:3 The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.”

Psalm of Joy

Lord,
Can a believer sit with You as she works on her needlework?
Can she worship as she’s sewing?
Can she praise you with the works of her hands?

Will You speak to her as she pens your words?
Will You water the seeds she’s sowing?

Will you walk with her as she waters her yard?
She’s blessed so much by Your flowers.
Each one she sees as a personal gift ---
You’re so generous with Your giving.

Will You help her as she pulls her weeds, to remove roots of bitterness;
So the sun can warm the soil of her heart and life can sprout anew?

Will You bring her joy as she creates?
Will You heal her heart of pain?

Lead her in paths of righteousness.
Touch her hands to bless your name.
Bow her heart in prayer to You.
Raise her voice in songs of praise.

For You are Lord --- all thanks to You!
You’ve healed the lame and raised the dead and caused the blind to see.
There’s nothing that You cannot do --- no task too difficult.
So raise this body and heart and soul
To sing and praise Your name.

All glory to my God and King!
Exalt my Savior’s name
For He has made my heart to fear, my soul to live again.

Psalm 146:2 “I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I have breathe.”

TWO GIFTS

I just love to go writing with my friend Jan! We have the best time. We each start with the same prompt and our stories sure take a different route. It's a lot of fun seeing where they go.

This one is from Tuesday, August 25, 2009. It's called:

TWO GIFTS

She was 24, a new graduate and a visitor in this remote village. "Now, why had she come here?” she asked herself again. Another morning awakened at 5:30 by a nasty rooster who was too old to cook and too much of a family pet to kill.

The sunrise was dazzling, she had to admit. She really loved the beauty surrounding this modest village. The Alps in the distance still held a romance for her to which no human could compare. The bed was warm and toasty and the window was not showing any frost this early October morning. Another day’s work and she would be off to her beloved mountains to set up an overnight camp.

She snuggled under the fluffy stack of covers and dreamed out the window. Reminiscing, she thought of the first time she’d been here. The second semester of her Junior college year, she’d decided to go to school in the little mission down the way. It was a good growing-up experience, not too far from familiar language and rules, but away from home for a time. She’d learned to live on little or much, learned to love others at any time of the morning, noon or night, and seen her mountains up close and personal for the first time. Boy! That seemed like an eternity ago.

Now she just lived for the weekend. What had changed? Was it the people or just the way she looked at them?

She had worked so very hard to finish school, then to pay her debts and finally to make her way here to this secluded community in Italy. She worked hard here every day to justify her room and board in the home of an uncommonly sweet young couple and their empty baby’s room. That’s where she put up.

What a hole it had left in their lives. Their smiles held a sort of tired look, the kind that a person gets just before drifting off, usually to sleep, but in their case, to the comfortable realm of not thinking. It was not the normal activity amongst young people, but then the death of a child could age a person beyond their years.

Keeran had tried at first to overlook it, then she tried praying earnestly for their hearts’ healing, now she just tried to avoid noticing it at all. She knew that she had been placed here for a reason, but she herself seemed too life-tired to care now. Was the mental fatigue contagious? What had happened to her vivacious love of life? Now she couldn’t wait to get away.

She prayed, “Lord please help me. I know I came here for a reason. You wouldn’t have led me to this particular village to this precious, mourning couple without a result or two in mind. I’ve only been here for six months and I haven’t helped a bit to alleve their sorrow and I seem to be afflicted by this mourning spirit hanging over my life. What’s up?”

Almost immediately the answer came --- not at all what she’d expected. “Take them with you,” were the words that played themselves over and over in her mind.

But… but… but… she tried to say. This was her outing. She needed to get away. She wanted to get away from the heaviness and the hurting. She needed the gentle lover of her mountains to soothe the sadness from her. Now, take them with me? Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh! Okay. I will, she acquiesced.

She went downstairs to a meager breakfast of bread and curds with a strong cup of coffee to make it through the day. When Sharla came over to serve Vernon his second cup of coffee, Keeran broached the subject.

“Hey guys,” she spoke, attempting to sound eager. “I’m going to the mountains this weekend, tomorrow, for a sleep out in God’s creation. I’d love to have you join me! Please make plans to come along.”

For a minute, the two aged hearts hemmed and hawed. Then, a youthful twinkle tried to brighten their eyes. “We’d love to,” spoke Vernon for the both of them. “We have two tents. You can use one of them.” Sharla was startled but took control. I’d better get preparin’ some eats today.” She almost looked happy now.

Keeran thought to herself, “Well, at least I’ll have a tent and won’t have to sleep in the open.” She swallowed the last bite of bread and downed her coffee then headed outside to gather the eggs and feed the goats and sheep. She worked harder than usual that day and hardly gave the weekend plans another thought.

When she rose the next morning, she was a bit surprised to see her two weekend guests preparing to go. Vernon said jovially, “We thought it’d be best to get an early start so that we can get the camp set up before noon. It’ll give us more time for hiking in the daylight hours. Don’t want to disturb the animals’ routine by coming in at their feeding time.” Sharla was actually red-faced and smiling from the hurried activities and hope for the mountain air.

Keeran packed quickly and the three started out. The hike up was gorgeous. The campsite was perfect. The animals were almost friendly as if they had made a space just for the three young humans.

Vernon let Keeran lead the afternoon hike and he took up the rear. He was acting gracious since it was her weekend plans that he and his dear wife were enjoying. Keeran could hear her two house-mates talk and chuckle all through the afternoon. She was glad they had joined her.

Sharla and Keeran prepared a complete supper and the hungry campers made it all disappear. They all had had a wonderful day and retired early to their separate tents. Keeran fell fast asleep so pleasured to be in her beloved mountain sanctuary.

Fast forward one year:

This morning when the “beloved” rooster pet crowed, Keeran slipped out from under the stacked quilted coverings on her bed and joyfully listened to the sounds of a bright three month old baby boy hungry for his momma, glad to be alive and an adorable young momma bustling about cooing at him that his wait was not a moment longer while she picked him up and held him close to her. She could hear the sounds of a proud papa telling him cheerfully that he would learn to wait one day on his breakfast while his little wife would feed their sonshine.

When Keeran went to the bathroom to freshen up for the day, she didn’t mind a bit this time when the pipes groaned, then vomited rusty water out into the sink. She just looked up toward heaven and whispered a grateful prayer. “Thank you Almighty God for giving me this family. Thank you for knowing enough to send me to this beautiful place in Your creation so that I can dwell with You in the mountains at the top of the world for the rest of my life. Amen!”

This was our prompt: The pipes groaned, then vomited rusty water out into the sink.
