HEAVENLY ADDITION

Excerpts and renditions of the 2nd letter of Peter in the New Testament

From: Simon Peter, the apostle of Christ Jesus to all believers, grace and peace come from the knowledge of God and Christ Jesus.

God, Jesus, have given us everything we need for life and godliness --- these also come through our knowledge of Him (God, Jesus) who called us and saved us. Because of what He’s given us for life and godliness (all) we can participate in Jesus’ divine nature by escaping corruption caused by evil desires --- or rather, to live above them (conquer them) through our participation in (living in) His divine nature.

We are to make every effort, use all opportunity to add: Faith + Goodness + Knowledge + Self-control + Perseverance + Godliness + Brotherly Kindness + Love. If we keep adding these to our lives in increasing amounts, the will keep us from being ineffective and unproductive in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Remember: we need this knowledge. It brings grace and peace, gives us everything we need for life and godliness, brings us his precious promises, allows us to walk/live in His divine nature and keeps us effective and productive as Christians and servants of our Lord Jesus Christ.

If we do not continue to add these things into our lives, we become nearsighted and forget the cleansing God did in us through Jesus and by the Holy Spirit. That makes us no good for the kingdom because our focus is too near to ourselves.

So do these things: Add to Faith + Goodness + Knowledge + Self-control + Perseverance + Godliness + Brotherly Kindness + Love. Be eager to do this and to keep adding these things so that you will make your calling and election sure (steadfast, permanent). If you continue to do these things, you will not fall ever and you will receive a rich (open-armed) welcome into Jesus’ eternal kingdom forever and ever. Amen!

PRAISE GOD FOR A NEW DAY

Well, it’s a gorgeous day! It’s gonna be a good one.

I had my new favorite breakfast drink: a whole sweet potato and orange juice, blended to liquid. It’s not my favorite because of how it tastes, even though it tastes good. It’s my favorite because it puts me on the road to healing. Yes!!!

Yesterday was good, too. I got to go to lunch with my good friend Jan and hear how her novel is coming along. Can’t wait to read the whole thing. You’ve got to get it as soon as it goes out on the market. I just love having a friend who writes.

I love having friends! God is so good --- He’s given me many. He even gave me incredibly wonderful children to be my friends too, for life! That’s amazing! Thank you Heavenly Father!

By the way, here's the newest print for VintageVerses.etsy.com. It's not listed yet, but let me know if you want it and I'll get it on there asap!

Joyfully,
Joy

A PSALM OF JOY

Jeremiah 31:3 The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.”

Psalm of Joy

Lord,
Can a believer sit with You as she works on her needlework?
Can she worship as she’s sewing?
Can she praise you with the works of her hands?

Will You speak to her as she pens your words?
Will You water the seeds she’s sowing?

Will you walk with her as she waters her yard?
She’s blessed so much by Your flowers.
Each one she sees as a personal gift ---
You’re so generous with Your giving.

Will You help her as she pulls her weeds, to remove roots of bitterness;
So the sun can warm the soil of her heart and life can sprout anew?

Will You bring her joy as she creates?
Will You heal her heart of pain?

Lead her in paths of righteousness.
Touch her hands to bless your name.
Bow her heart in prayer to You.
Raise her voice in songs of praise.

For You are Lord --- all thanks to You!
You’ve healed the lame and raised the dead and caused the blind to see.
There’s nothing that You cannot do --- no task too difficult.
So raise this body and heart and soul
To sing and praise Your name.

All glory to my God and King!
Exalt my Savior’s name
For He has made my heart to fear, my soul to live again.

Psalm 146:2 “I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I have breathe.”

TWO GIFTS

I just love to go writing with my friend Jan! We have the best time. We each start with the same prompt and our stories sure take a different route. It's a lot of fun seeing where they go.

This one is from Tuesday, August 25, 2009. It's called:

TWO GIFTS

She was 24, a new graduate and a visitor in this remote village. "Now, why had she come here?” she asked herself again. Another morning awakened at 5:30 by a nasty rooster who was too old to cook and too much of a family pet to kill.

The sunrise was dazzling, she had to admit. She really loved the beauty surrounding this modest village. The Alps in the distance still held a romance for her to which no human could compare. The bed was warm and toasty and the window was not showing any frost this early October morning. Another day’s work and she would be off to her beloved mountains to set up an overnight camp.

She snuggled under the fluffy stack of covers and dreamed out the window. Reminiscing, she thought of the first time she’d been here. The second semester of her Junior college year, she’d decided to go to school in the little mission down the way. It was a good growing-up experience, not too far from familiar language and rules, but away from home for a time. She’d learned to live on little or much, learned to love others at any time of the morning, noon or night, and seen her mountains up close and personal for the first time. Boy! That seemed like an eternity ago.

Now she just lived for the weekend. What had changed? Was it the people or just the way she looked at them?

She had worked so very hard to finish school, then to pay her debts and finally to make her way here to this secluded community in Italy. She worked hard here every day to justify her room and board in the home of an uncommonly sweet young couple and their empty baby’s room. That’s where she put up.

What a hole it had left in their lives. Their smiles held a sort of tired look, the kind that a person gets just before drifting off, usually to sleep, but in their case, to the comfortable realm of not thinking. It was not the normal activity amongst young people, but then the death of a child could age a person beyond their years.

Keeran had tried at first to overlook it, then she tried praying earnestly for their hearts’ healing, now she just tried to avoid noticing it at all. She knew that she had been placed here for a reason, but she herself seemed too life-tired to care now. Was the mental fatigue contagious? What had happened to her vivacious love of life? Now she couldn’t wait to get away.

She prayed, “Lord please help me. I know I came here for a reason. You wouldn’t have led me to this particular village to this precious, mourning couple without a result or two in mind. I’ve only been here for six months and I haven’t helped a bit to alleve their sorrow and I seem to be afflicted by this mourning spirit hanging over my life. What’s up?”

Almost immediately the answer came --- not at all what she’d expected. “Take them with you,” were the words that played themselves over and over in her mind.

But… but… but… she tried to say. This was her outing. She needed to get away. She wanted to get away from the heaviness and the hurting. She needed the gentle lover of her mountains to soothe the sadness from her. Now, take them with me? Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh! Okay. I will, she acquiesced.

She went downstairs to a meager breakfast of bread and curds with a strong cup of coffee to make it through the day. When Sharla came over to serve Vernon his second cup of coffee, Keeran broached the subject.

“Hey guys,” she spoke, attempting to sound eager. “I’m going to the mountains this weekend, tomorrow, for a sleep out in God’s creation. I’d love to have you join me! Please make plans to come along.”

For a minute, the two aged hearts hemmed and hawed. Then, a youthful twinkle tried to brighten their eyes. “We’d love to,” spoke Vernon for the both of them. “We have two tents. You can use one of them.” Sharla was startled but took control. I’d better get preparin’ some eats today.” She almost looked happy now.

Keeran thought to herself, “Well, at least I’ll have a tent and won’t have to sleep in the open.” She swallowed the last bite of bread and downed her coffee then headed outside to gather the eggs and feed the goats and sheep. She worked harder than usual that day and hardly gave the weekend plans another thought.

When she rose the next morning, she was a bit surprised to see her two weekend guests preparing to go. Vernon said jovially, “We thought it’d be best to get an early start so that we can get the camp set up before noon. It’ll give us more time for hiking in the daylight hours. Don’t want to disturb the animals’ routine by coming in at their feeding time.” Sharla was actually red-faced and smiling from the hurried activities and hope for the mountain air.

Keeran packed quickly and the three started out. The hike up was gorgeous. The campsite was perfect. The animals were almost friendly as if they had made a space just for the three young humans.

Vernon let Keeran lead the afternoon hike and he took up the rear. He was acting gracious since it was her weekend plans that he and his dear wife were enjoying. Keeran could hear her two house-mates talk and chuckle all through the afternoon. She was glad they had joined her.

Sharla and Keeran prepared a complete supper and the hungry campers made it all disappear. They all had had a wonderful day and retired early to their separate tents. Keeran fell fast asleep so pleasured to be in her beloved mountain sanctuary.

Fast forward one year:

This morning when the “beloved” rooster pet crowed, Keeran slipped out from under the stacked quilted coverings on her bed and joyfully listened to the sounds of a bright three month old baby boy hungry for his momma, glad to be alive and an adorable young momma bustling about cooing at him that his wait was not a moment longer while she picked him up and held him close to her. She could hear the sounds of a proud papa telling him cheerfully that he would learn to wait one day on his breakfast while his little wife would feed their sonshine.

When Keeran went to the bathroom to freshen up for the day, she didn’t mind a bit this time when the pipes groaned, then vomited rusty water out into the sink. She just looked up toward heaven and whispered a grateful prayer. “Thank you Almighty God for giving me this family. Thank you for knowing enough to send me to this beautiful place in Your creation so that I can dwell with You in the mountains at the top of the world for the rest of my life. Amen!”

This was our prompt: The pipes groaned, then vomited rusty water out into the sink.

My Latest Writing Adventure

My friend Jan & I were at it again. We had another writing date and this is what I wrote.

I hope you enjoy it! Please comment to give me any suggestions. I like your input!

SOMEONE IS WATCHING…

She discreetly placed the book on the table in the food court, then walked away. She needed to clock in at “Soupy Suds” to start work. This was not going to be just another boring day in the food court. Today, she was watching people.

Karla had been a student of people since she was a tot. Now, in her sixth year of college, she was planning to make her master’s thesis on peoples’ reactions to the book she had purposely dropped.

The title read: “Someone is watching…” The cover was a paste-up of her own design with a picture of the mall food court from a little above. She’d taken it when she was up on that rising platform cleaning the lighting fixtures above the grill. Then she’d taken another from the top of the escalator and blended the two in her photo editing class.

The first one to come by and check out the book was the manager in the taco stand next door. He just glanced over it and walked on by not giving it a second thought. He was too busy to think of anyone or anything else but work. It seemed to be his life. He certainly spent his entire life at the mall.

Next, the little stooped young man that cleans the floor stopped by and looked at it. Then, he looked up and all around, nervously searching to see who might have him in their vision. Finding no one to fear, he continued sweeping with his dust catcher, looking around timidly every two or three steps. She hadn’t meant to instill fear in this young man. He was quiet and timid and had never been any trouble to a single soul.

Here came the girls from “Only You” store to get their morning lattes. They were giggling at a remark someone had read off of their text message. They were innocent enough. Karla wondered if they had ever had to scrimp and save for anything, like education for instance.

Then, they laughed out loud as the reader tripped because she hadn’t been looking where she was going but only at the phone in her hand. The burst of chuckles stopped short as they saw her suddenly blank expression. She had fallen against a chair and had come face to face with the cover of that book.

When the three petite divas saw it they began to speak in whispers, jumpy at the thought of an imagined stalker waiting in the wings to take advantage of their least indiscretion. The threesome purchased their lattes and headed to open the cheery boutique without the least little bit of cheeriness in their attitudes.

Why hadn’t anyone stopped long enough to open the book, Karla pondered? Inside it held the identity of the One who was really watching.

Pushing and shoving came the group of early adolescents. The boys chortled and shoved, slapped and grabbed at each other causing quite a ruckus in the otherwise calm of the court. When they came by the table with the book, one of them reached out and grabbed it, lifted it up and swatted his friend with it and returned it to its resting place. Another of the young homosapiens made a face upon seeing the book’s cover. Then the entire group followed suit making faces at each other acting like scary jungle creatures peering at their prey. What a fun, rambunctious group of kids.

The book lay there for a while in solitude and stillness until a young business woman came by and smiled upon it as she glanced downward. She went to the counter of the “Salad Stand” and ordered her daily special with an orange juice to drink. Receiving her meal and paying with a smile and a thank you, she returned to the book’s table and sat down. She said a soft prayer and reached for the book as she took her first bite.

As she opened it, she looked past the first page like she was hungry for something more than just the sandwich and drink she’d just purchased. She read for a while, smiling, tearing-up, chuckling then just holding the volume close to her heart. She sat, not looking around, not fearful as the others had been, not nervous or apathetic or jovial as the ones before her. She was at peace!

When she got up to leave, she started to take the paste covered copy with her, then stopping as if in thought, she placed it on another table propping it open this time so that the reader might find the answer before scanning the title and photos on the front. She walked away, confident and thankful with a little more spunk in her step than had been present earlier.

Karla didn’t see the One watching her as she watched each of the others. She didn’t see Him taking notes and His eyes tearing, yet proud as He’d watched her watch them and pray for each one for help and guidance, protection and provision, love and joy and peace. Indeed, Someone was watching but it was not only the girl in the worn-out uniform with the college ID.

Thank you, that Someone for watching out for me!
